Questions people actually ask

Including the awkward ones. If something isn't here, call and ask. We'd rather tell you now.

What is post-frame construction, and is it the same as a pole barn?

Post-frame construction refers to a popular method of building construction used for all types of applications in residential, commercial, and agriculture. It has traditionally been used for outbuildings such as pole barns, but it's not limited to that. Horse barns, riding arenas, garages, hobby shops, she sheds, hay storage sheds, machinery storage, even homes and offices can use post-frame construction.

Pole barn is the older name for the same method. The posts, or poles, are either driven into the ground or secured above ground, and they carry the vertical structural support. That means fewer load-bearing walls, which gives you more freedom in where the windows and doors go.

  • 1. No foundation required

While a level building site is required, a foundation or even a concrete floor is not. This significantly reduces the cost to build, and it speeds up the process because builders don't have to wait on curing cement.

  • 2. Cost efficiency

Post-frame is a surprisingly affordable building method. No foundation requirements, along with fewer overall building materials, reduces both material and labor costs.

  • 3. Building strength

Post-frame buildings use heavy-duty posts and roof trusses along with metal roofs and siding. Combined, that produces a remarkably durable structure that stands up to heavy snow and wind, and to daily use.

  • 4. Time to build

Post-frame buildings go up quickly because they don't require a cement foundation or interior walls, and many of the materials are pre-manufactured. That's often why post-frame gets chosen when a building is needed fast.

  • 5. Flexibility

Post-frame relies on long-spanning roof trusses that stay rigid even over large spans, so load-bearing interior walls aren't required. That makes it a great choice where large open spaces are needed, like riding arenas.

  • 6. Insulation

Because post-frame uses heavy-duty posts spaced several feet apart, there's more room for insulation without studs getting in the way. That means faster insulating, fewer points of heat loss, and energy savings over time.

Do you carry state-required liability insurance?

Yes. We are fully licensed and insured. We'll be happy to provide our insurance certifications to your local building department.

Do I need a building permit?

Yes, you'll need to obtain a permit through your local codes department.

How long will it take to build my structure?

Scheduling your project is the first step. Our timetable varies with seasonal swings, but we always work to schedule your project as quickly as possible. Then the crew builds your structure. Build times vary by project, but you can expect a fast, professional crew that works until your building is completed.

Does my building site need to be level?

Before we begin construction, the site needs to have a slope no greater than 6 inches from corner to corner.

Do you offer excavating services to level my site?

We typically ask that the homeowner handles any excavation needed before the building starts. We can help you find a good company to do the work.

Do you offer custom size buildings?

Yes.

Who determines exactly where my building will be placed?

We ask that you meet with us on site to go over where the building will be located before construction begins.

What warranty comes with my building?

Two warranties, from two different places. We warranty our own workmanship for one year from completion, and that's written into your contract.

The materials carry their manufacturer's warranty. We work with several manufacturers and the terms differ by product, so what's covered on your roof panels won't necessarily match what's covered on your doors or trim. Some run as long as 40 years. Before you sign we'll show you the warranty for the specific products going on your building, and we'll go through it again with you at the final walkthrough.

What does a post-frame building cost?

There's no single number, and any builder who gives you a firm one without seeing your site is guessing. What we can tell you is what actually moves the price. Size matters less than most people expect. Door openings, wall height, insulation, site prep, and finishes move it far more.
